For the past 15 years, director/director of photography John Roderick has cut his teeth in the world of adventure, action sports and music, crafting eye opening imagery and building stories from some of todays most respected athletes, musicians and changemakers. Much of John’s commercial, reality and documentary film work focus on highlighting people, the planet and brands that are serving the greater good and inspire us to live closer to the outdoors. Becoming a lensman in 2004 has led to travel in over 60 countries and collaborations with musicians Michael Franti, Jack Johnson, and Donavon Frankenreiter, inspirational leaders Robin Lim “CNN’s Hero of the Year,” and Aron Ralston, author of “Between A Rock & Hard Place,” to winter Olympians Lindsey Vonn, Shaun White and Mikaela Shiffrin.

Many of the projects featured on this site share both John’s eye behind the lens and editorial vision for storytelling. John’s camera work is stylistically verité using simple but effective tools like natural light and negative fill to shape authentic stories and portraiture. John’s always taken a photojournalistic approach with a theatrical feel to light and camera movement, often blending scene coverage with high-speed camera work, shaped light and lens choice that add another layer of visceral impact.

His work experience is widely diverse, ranging from larger commercials requiring over 50,000 watts, to scene work for reality television series, highly coordinated action sports stunts, to documentary films in some of worlds most remote locations.

John holds lighting and cinematography certificates from the Maine Media Workshops in Rockport, Maine, mentoring under director of photography Russell Carpenter (Titanic, Charlie’s Angels, Ant Men) & lighting gaffer Morris Flam (Black Swam, The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty, The Tourist).

Born in the small mill town of Rumford, Maine, John moved west to Vail, Colorado in 1997 to pursue his passion for snowboarding and travel. He quickly became inspired to document the journey and friends that the adventure sports community fostered. Today John leads a boutique film production company based in Denver, Colorado where he delivers on a wide range of branded content, commercials, music videos and documentary films.
