ABOUT JOHN RODERICK

For the past 13 years, director of photography & editor John Roderick has cut his teeth in the world of adventure, action sports, music and culture, crafting eye opening imagery and building stories from some of todays most respected athletes, musicians and changemakers. Much of John’s work focuses on highlighting people, the planet and brands that are serving the greater good and inspire us to live closer to the outdoors. Becoming a lensman in 2004 has enabled world travel and the collaboration with difference makers including musicians Michael Franti, Jack Johnson, and Donavon Frankenreiter, inspirational leaders Robin Lim “CNN’s Hero of the Year,” and Aron Ralston, author of “Between A Rock & Hard Place,” to winter Olympians Lindsey Vonn, Shaun White, Mikaela Shiffrin and Gretchen Bleiler.

Many of the works on this site have shared both John’s eye and editorial for storytelling as a director of photography & editor. John’s work is stylistically cinema verité using simple but effective tools like natural light and negative fill to shape authentic stories and portraiture. He’s always taken a photojournalistic approach with a big budget feel, often mixing scene coverage with high-speed camera work, HMI lighting and prime lens choice that adds another layer of visceral impact.

His work experience is widely diverse, ranging from larger scale commercials requiring over 50,000 watts, to scene work for reality television series, highly coordinated action sports productions, to journalistic camera work in some of worlds most remote locations.

John holds lighting and cinematography certificates from the Maine Media Workshops in Rockport, Maine, mentoring under director of photography Russell Carpenter (Titanic, Charlie’s Angels, Ant Men) & lighting gaffer Morris Flam (Black Swam, The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty, The Tourist).

Born in the small mill town of Rumford, Maine, John moved west to Vail, Colorado in 1997 to pursue his passion for snowboarding and the outdoors. He quickly became inspired to document the journey and friendships that the action sports community encapsulated. Today John leads a boutique film production company based in Denver, Colorado where he delivers on a wide range of commercial, documentary and branded projects.
